Astrological Associations
Ascendant
Also referred to as the rising sign. The zodiacal sign and degree that is rising on the eastern horizon at the time the chart is cast. The ascendant is found within the first house of a chart and usually marks the cusp of this house, depending on which house system is being used. It is calculated based on the time, date and place of the event that the chart has been cast for. The ascendent is always exactly opposite the descendant.
Angles
The Ascendant (ASC), Descendant (DSC), Medium Coeli (MC) and Imum Coeli (IC). Often marking the cusp for the first, seventh, tenth and fourth houses respectively, depending on the house system used. These are calculated based on the time, date and place of the event that the chart has been cast for.
Applying
A planet moving towards another planet, angle or nodal axis point.
Aspect
The angular relationship between planets, angles or nodal axis.
Chart
Sometimes referred to as a birth or natal chart if the event is based on someone’s birth. A circular map showing the positions of the angles, houses, planets and nodal axis at a specific date, time and location.
Cusp
The boundary between either the signs or the houses, showing where one ends and the next one begins. A planet can only ever be in one sign even if it is on the cusp. The house cusp refers to the entry point of each house by zodiacal sign and degree.
Descendant (DSC)
Also referred to as the setting sign. The descendant is found within the seventh house of a chart and usually marks the cusp of this house, depending on which house system is being used. It is exactly opposite the ascendant.
Elements
Sometimes referred to as the triplicities. Fire, Earth, Water and Air make up the four elements of the zodiac, with each one symbolising a different quality of life. All signs associated within each element are connected by a 120° aspect, also known as a trine.
Houses
The division of the chart into 12 distinct sectors, with each one representing specific areas of life.
Imum Coeli (IC)
One of the 4 angles of the chart. The IC symbolises our lineage, family and home. It is exactly opposite the MC
Medium Coeli (MC)
Also referred to as the Midheaven. One of the 4 angles of the chart. The MC symbolises our career, social status and public image. It is exactly opposite the IC.
Modes
Also referred to as the modalities or the quadruplicities. Cardinal, Fixed and Mutable make up the 3 modes of the zodiac, with each one symbolising a different expression of the changing seasons. Each zodiac sign is associated to one of the modes.
Separating
A planet moving away from another planet, angle or nodal axis.
Transit
The ongoing movement of the planets. It can often refer to the aspects between a planets current position to planets in an existing chart.
Void of course
Most frequently in reference to the Moon. The time period between when a planet makes its last major aspect to another planet before changing zodiac signs. Not considered a good time to do activities that require a result.
